Baja Beach Club began in America over 10 years ago. There are Baja's in several parts of the USA plus Barcelona and Rotterdam. Baja opened in July 1999 on the Gateshead side of the Quayside on the river Tyne.
Party nights at Baja with a Hawaiian backdrop. The music policy is "party" with the best music from the 1950's through to the present day. Popular, good sized club with a dance floor. Live stage shows have included The Weather Girls and Jackson Five performing to the hit records. Alas, I don't mean the real thing, it's people dressed up singing along to the likes of "It's Raining Men" and "YMCA".
Baja holds 1700 people and is open 6 nights a week until 2 am. Baja has a beach theme (nets, bits of old wood, plastic dolphins and sharks etc) with 2 open floors, 6 bars and a VIP lounge.
If you want to check out the atmosphere, the DJ and the music policy yourself before turning up and paying your cash, you can listen to a night at Baja on Metro FM 97.1 broadcast live on a Friday from 11 pm to 1 am. Whenever I get a taxi home on a Friday, the driver always has this on. There's the odd up to date track but it's mainly party and cheese. The DJ does requests and makes announcements for birthdays and hen/stag nights etc. Baja has 16 webcams, so if you want to see what a Friday night is like live (and check out the booty), then get yourself on the website and the link is on the first page. They're on 9 pm to 2 am from Monday to Saturday.
There is a wide variety of drinks promotions through the week such as all bottles £2 on Monday and Wednesday, Red Bull £1.50 a can and cocktails on special Monday to Thursday. All through the week Moet Champagne (provided with ice bucket and champagne flute glasses) is £30 a bottle.
There are girls in bikini’s (yes guys, I kid you not) selling bottles from a
chest fridge (how appropriate) so you don’t have to wait at one of the 6 bars
unless you want draught or spirits. These are The Tub Girls and you can vote
which one you like best on the website. There are 8 "tubs" (4
on each floor) filled with bottled beers and alcopops on ice. Apparently
you are never more than 20 feet away from getting a drink.
If you’re on the pull, you’re very likely to do so here, probably in the queue
before you even get in. Popular place for hen/stag nights.
Baja holds the title of Discotheque of the Year for the North
East 2000 and won the award at the National beda Nightclub Awards in Birmingham
in July 2000. It also holds the title of Best Themed Nightclub for the
whole of the UK.
Go over the Swing Bridge from the Newcastle side and Baja is
on your right (Tuxedo Princess on the left). On Monday, Friday and Saturday
nights you’ll find huge queues so get there early, maybe around 9 pm, it’s
not unusual to wait up to an hour and a half to get in at pub closing time,
believe me, I’ve done it. The club is right on the river so unless it’s summer,
you’ll be freezing cold by the time you get inside. There are burger vans
on hand to keep you and your stomach entertained. Buffalo Joes, opposite,
is open until 1am so if the queue, or the cold gets too much for you, or you're
just plain sick of watching people through the glass in the warmth with bottles
in their hands, you can go there instead.
